With land in cities at a premium, skinnier houses are becoming more popular. But they also bring some design challenges. So, how do you create a sense of space in a building just 2.5 metres wide? Japanese studio, YUAA Architects managed it by removing most of the internal walls which created an illusion of space. The four-story building is little more than a slither, sandwiched between two houses, but the designers clever used split levels on each floors to create different areas without the need for walls.
Skinny houses have also become increasingly popular, with recently completed projects including a 3.4M house in Osaka and a 2.3M wide house in London.
Japanese studio YUUA Architects & Associates have fitted a 2.5 meter-wide house between two existing structures in Tokyo.
Each story has been separated into two main floors with the use of elongated narrow split-level floors, creating natural dividers between different spaces.
Both staircases consist of steel treads without supporting risers, and slender handrails allowing light to filter through.
Natural light from the window wall at the front of the building lights each corner of the house, whilst developing the floor differences.
In addition, old scaffolding boards have been applied to the floors and ceilings to provide texture and an element of character.
